What's the WISE GUYS PROJECT about?

Retrenchments, an ageing population and critical skills shortages mean there is a need for effective strategies to attract, retain and upskill mature workers. Many Registered Training Organisations struggle to attract skilled employees to develop the next generation of workers in the construction industry. Upskilling existing workers for new roles in their trades will provide some ways to do these things.

WISE GUYS is exploring options and providing support for mature workers to be:

  • Retained in their current trade and the construction industry as a trainer
  • Attracted back to their sector or related industry area in a training role or
  • Move into the Vocational Education Training sector.

What's WISE GUYS trying to achieve?

A pilot project was run in 2009 to underpin efforts by the Construction Industry Training Board to work with industry associations to provide a qualification and career pathway for mature workers suited to upskilling into an education role. The pathway can lead to:

  • A formal qualification in education (the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment) or completion of accredited units of study increased effectiveness and delivery of technical training to students, technical college or trade school students and young workers in industry
  • New Vocational Education and Training practitioners who transfer their industry and trade experience.

How are mature workers being supported by this project?

The Construction Industry Training Board provided tuition scholarships to workers in the Construction Industry, with the pilot program focusing on those from skill areas in demand Bricklayers, Carpenters/Joiners, Heritage Artisans including Stonemasons, Plant Operators, and Plumbers.
